The Cardinal Duke of York

The great Marco Foppoli has designed (and very kindly passed along to me) the badge for the committee which has been assembled to commemorate the two-hundredth anniversary of the passing of the Cardinal Duke of York, or King Henry IX and I as was his style according to the Jacobite succession. I’m not entirely sure what events are being planned, but I believe there will be a conference in Rome around the anniversary in August.

According to the protocols of the Roman Catholic Church, a cardinal’s red hat should have fifteen tassels interwoven with gold thread on either side. The tassels would descend in five rows with the bottom row containing five tassels on either side.

Yes, Cardinal, that is the current protocol, however, the use of the thirty knots (or “fiochi”)was not codified until 1832. before that date thirty knots (or tassels, if you prefer) was the exception more than the rule and the prevailing cardinatial knot count was twelve. For further reading on the topic “Cardinals and Heraldry” by Mark Turnham Elvins is considered the definative work on the topic.
