De Waterkant

De Waterkant (Afrikaans for “the waterside”) is a tiny neighborhood on the outer edge of the inner part of Cape Town, near the Bo-Kaap and just beside Signal Hill from which the noon-day gun is fired. These photos were taken by a contributor to one of the skyscrapercity.com forums.

Interesting. The feel is nice, but the colors aren’t exactly to my taste.

I like it. It does, however, remind me of Allentown, Buffalo, NY’s gay neighborhood, whose Victorian houses has similar color schemes.

I think De Waterkant stole its colour scheme from the Bo-Kaap, the Cape Malay neighbourhood next door.

It looks to me as though the pictures were taken on a rainy/overcast day.

If it had been a sunnier day, the colours would not look so out of place:
think Greek islands, whitewash and sizzling blue sky…
