One of the most fantastic churches in England, and damn accusations of its so-called “…air of Popery about the gilded capitals, the heavy arches…” and its supposed “un-English” character. The English need not maintain a static and rather artificial Gothic ad nauseum. Gothic is magnificent in its own right, but really… there is nothing that is not splendid about this cathedral. Its proportion is near flawless and its decor is highly ornamental, but–to my mind–restrained.
