More or less, the musings of a graduate of a Scottish university, born in New York, formerly resident in South Africa, and now living in London.
@cusackandrew: Visited Erskine Childers' old regiment in London tonight. His name on the Boer War roll of honour was pointed out with ironic pride.

The Nook, Stellenbosch

This place opened up in Stellenbosch just before I left South Africa, but I never had the chance to check it out. I like to look of the place, even though the colours are a bit too subdued for my taste.

Looks like they don’t permit smoking.

These photos were taken before they had opened – the restaurant is actually very colourful, with bright pink and orange proteas on the tables, purple and orange upholstered chairs and quirky illustrations on the walls.

Too bad you didn’t get to check it out before you left, the food is tasty and the vibe is bustling & cheerful.

PS: South African smoking laws don’t permit smoking in restaurants, or any public places for that matter, unless there is a designated enclosed space. People are allowed to smoke outside, though (though there are apparently new laws in the pipeline that will not permit smoking in outdoor dining areas)
