Actually the French tacitly supported Charles' restoration attempts, because they were deeply afraid of Austria and Hungary drifting into Germany's orbit.

One must not be too hard on old Horthy. He was admittedly a Hungarian first, and never really a Habsburg loyalist.
One would love to believe it otherwise, but I suspect that an attempted restoration would have been stopped by the Freemmasons of France and the United States. The Revolution had won, and was not about to give up any of its victories lightly.

Traitor Horthy?
Certainly de jure but I wonder ( and I do not know the answer ) if his heart was with the King but his head alarmed by the Little Entente?

Although a Calvinist he did at least attend the Requiem for the King in Buda.

I do not admire the man. He did however have some honourable qualities, not least in regard to the human rights of Hungarian Jews.

Your posts are, as ever, illuminating and greatly valued.
