@cusackandrew: Visited Erskine Childers' old regiment in London tonight. His name on the Boer War roll of honour was pointed out with ironic pride.

Splendid Cusack; one of my all time favourites.
Never forget that his wife (born a Schwarzenberg, and a sister of both Felix, about-to-be Prime Minister of Austria, and Friedrich, the Cardinal Archbishop of Prague, not to mention their elder brother, lord of the family estates of more than a million acres) was foully murdered by the revolutionaries (no feeble talk of “stray bullets” here, if you please).
This exacerbated his feelings somewhat, as might be imagined.
