I WATCH VERY little television, mostly mysteries (Poirot, Lynley, etc.) and mostly only by the time it comes out on DVD. However I did catch a good few episodes of the BBC-HBO extravaganza Rome. Normally, I would not dream of dragging the sordid world of television onto this little corner of the web. Blame Daniel Larison, twas he who inspired me to take the “Which character are you?” quiz for Rome:
| What character best describes you from HBO`s Rome?
Octavian You are very intelligent and well educated, you think everything through and observe all around you. Despite your intelligence, you have self-doubts, which you will only confide into those closet to you. People underestimate your ability to lead others. |

Coincidentally, Octavian was my favorite character, though he got a bit boring in the second and final season. I disagreed with their portrayal of Brutus, however. We could do with more of his ilk these days. (So too with Octavian).

Once again, Mr Cusack, you reveal yourself to be markedly lacking in a sure sense of what makes a good film. I am astonished by this fact; your judgement is otherwise almost invariably sound. Is it your youth which lets you down here, I wonder, or a typically American lack of discrimination when it comes to the silver screen?
The fact is that ‘Rome’ is an atrocity, badly acted and atrociously conceived. Now if you want to see the period covered in a manner akin to genius, then watch ‘I, Claudius’. The difference will amaze and enlighten you.
Outrageous!
Well, I’m glad you’ve come around to seeing things my way. Outrageous ‘Rome’ certainly is.
