Hi, I have a Google Alert for Monckton - it being my mother's maiden name. Can you tell me whose son Ed Monckton is? We visited his grandparents 20 years or so ago in Kent - his great grandfather and mine were first cousins.

Thanks a lot,

Ric Foxley,
New Zealand

Welcome back, Andrew. Sounds like you had a great time at the ball. (I'm glad that you were able to find a ticket!)

Stickling is useless, I'm afraid. If it makes sense - even a new kind of sense - it doesn't matter whether or not it breaks an abstract rule. Much of conventional language and language uses were once transgressive abuses, deviant or outlandish for the purpose of expressiveness. It is also how some words have lost specific or powerful meaning over the years (e.g. awesome, awful, etc, which are no longer specifically religious and laudatory in a fearful fashion, but common adjectives, or worse, mere intensifiers).

Regarding "as per,"

I stand corrected -- it is listed in the OED as accepted usage.

Etymologically/semantically, though, it makes little sense... Like saying the "general consensus" (since the consensus is already general).

No insult intended, by the way. Just a stickler for these kinds of things :-)

I do enjoy your writing!

Regarding 'as per usual': the OED includes it, raising no objections, so I see no cause against it.
