You might ask yourself what the population of, say, the Congo might have said about 'Old Europe' and its 'tribute'.

This article misses the point. Rumsfeld was talking about a new balance of power in Europe. By the grace of God the Eastern European states were liberated from communism and now all deserve to play a role in Europe's destiny. Why should France and Germany dictate European policy as they have for decades? (Although as long as Angela Merkl is in Germany, she can dictate as much as she wants.) Rumsfeld was not dismissing the values or culture of "Old Europe." After all, who is upholding the Christian heritage of Europe better, Chirac in France or the Kaczyński brothers in Poland?

What do we care, when Old Europe has gone for ever?

Oh, now I'm not bored any more. Now I'm depressed.

Thanks Andrew.

"From its colonies...came tribute which daily enhanced its wealth, convenience and comfort."

Ah, the simple mind of Peter Simple. Or should it perhaps be Simpleton?
