Andrew, I'm mortified; I promised to send you a copy of Sir Henry at Rawlinson's End and completely forgot. Email me with an email address and I'll send it to which ever corner of the world you inhabit. Many thanks for a most enjoyable evening, kind regards to the lovely Joanna.

So this is what Lt Col Bogle and his lady wife get up to in their spare time! (I heard a description of this lustrous event from the great man's own lips at Easter.)

Of course, Ms. Mary Louise needn't be quite so bitter. There have been plenty of Irish nationalists such as Daniel O'Connell and -- ahem! -- Justin McCarthy who have been monarchists. And of course St Thomas himself recommends monarchy as the best system of government.

Ireland has only suffered from republican ideas for the past 100 or so years; even Sinn Fein was monarchist when it was founded in 1905. I will never forget what 1916 stood for: a violent movement against both tradition and the wishes of the majority of the Irish people. James Connolly, you will recall, was a fanatical socialist, while Padraig Pearse et alia, while they had their merits, were fundamentally little more than reactionary Gaelicists prepared to reject most of the great literary history of Ireland merely because it was written in English.

At any rate, I'm not Irish, I'm American. But above all, I am Catholic and I believe that, ideally speaking, monarchies are more Catholic forms of government than republics, though naturally we are free to choose either.

And I am neither a fop nor a WFB wannabe! Humbug!

Besides, the Order of Malta is built on the idea of Christian charity. Is it so wrong for aristocrats, royalty, and the well-to-do to care about and raise money for the poor and less-advantaged?

How can an Irish-American Catholic (from New York) be so entranced by the likes of European royalty vermin.

The Irish are republicans in case you have forgotten what 1916 stood (and stands) for.

You are nothing but a fop and a William F. Buckley Jr. wannabe
